PROVERBS 8 - WISDOM'S CALL

"Listen to WISDOM call out! Hear, as UNDERSTANDING raises HER VOICE.....I call to you, all of you! I raise my voice to all people!.....Listen to Me, I have important things to tell you. Everything I SAY IS RIGHT!, for I SPEAK THR TRUTH and detest every kind of deception." Proverbs 8:1, 4,6&7 (NLT)

Proverbs is about knowing the difference between RIGHT AND WRONG. Young people are offered many paths:

1. WISDOM OF GOD (CHRIST)

"But Christ is the power of God and WISDOM OF GOD to those God has called Jews and Greeks ..... the Jews ask for MIRACLES and the Greeks want WISDOM. But we preach CHRIST ON THE CROSS." 1 Corinthians 1:22, 23a,24 (ICB)

If you want TRUE WISDOM it starts with a relationship with Jesus. WISDOM, KNOWLEDGE and UNDERSTANDING are the TRUTH that comes from living in the nature of JESUS HIMSELF.

Jesus is described in the New Testament as being WISDOM ITSELF.  When we seek WÀISDOM, we pursue JESUS. The first step is to SET GOALS, LIVE WELL, and SEEK WISDOM. An example of this is HONESTY AND TRUTH, in our communication and speech, words that are RIGHTEOUS and TRUE

"My advice is wholesome. There is nothing devious or crooked in it. My words are plain to anyone with understanding, clear to those with knowledge."                                                                                                                 Proverbs 8:8&9 (NLT)

"The fear of the Lord is to hate evil. I hate pride, arrogance, evil behaviour and perverse speech." Proverbs 8:13 (NIV)

This is what we want to be when we want to live like Jesus. For he despises these things: pride, arrogance, slander and gossip. He hates all evil and sin! If we hate sin we want to run to him as seek his forgiveness. God can change us if wee REPENT. We can seek RIGHTEOUSNESS and Jesus will gladly help us live a godly life with Him.

"But seek first  His Kingdom and HIS RIGHTEOUSNESS and all these things will be givento you as well." Matthew 6:33 (NIV)

"I tell you, ther will be rejoicing in Heaven over one sinner WHO REPENTS than over the ninety nine righteous persons who do not need to repent." Luke 15:7 (NIV)

2. FOLLOWING YOUR OWN WAY , OR GOD'S WAY.

A woman's wisdom is contrasted with an adulterer. She is "seductive and secretive". They show sensual pleasure and reveal a LACK OF TRUST IN GOD.  Wisdom is personified as a WOMAN - calling GOD'S PEOPLE to follow her ways. It is highly desirable!

We have choices to make and sometimes me can make the wrong ones, because we think we know better, even though WISDOM IS CRYING OUT FOR US TO LISTEN. Wisdom is  even more important than seeking after WEALTH. We need to make the right decisions, that will result in a positive transformation of our lives.

"Oprah Winfey tells us: "There is TRUE WISDOM in following INSTINCTS."  But this is a worldly view. Solomon reminds us that "TRUE WISDOM COMES FROM GOD." You can grow in a relationship with Him and His Son Jesus, by learing to REFLECT ON HIS WORD." Nicky Gumbel /Oprah Winfrey

"Choose my instruction instead of silver, knowledge rather than choice gold, for wisdom is more precious than rubies and nothing you want is equal to it."" Proverbs 7:10&11 (NIV/ICB)

"Your teachings are worth more to me than thousands of pieces of gold and silver." Psalm 119:72 (ICB)

It may sometimes be hard to know which choices are the right ones to make. But as David reminds us in his Psalm, and Solomon in Proverbs, if we read GOD'S WORD we will GAIN WISDOM for this is more precious than silver, gold and rubies.

Yes, we can receive riches and honour, enduring wealth and prosperity, golden fruit, the paths of righteousness and justice, treasures of goodness. But our richest inheritance is having this RELATIONSHIP.

"I love those who love Me, and those who seel me find me......I walk in the way of righteousness along the paths of justice, bestowing a rich inheritance on those who LOVE ME and making their treasuries full." Proverbs 8:17, 20&21 (NIV)

3. AIM TO BE FULL OF JOY

"Wisdom is a kind of sanctified common sense. It leads to the greatest self understanding that helps you steer through life and master challeginges ahead."                                                                                                              Nicky Gumbel

Jesus wants us to be full of JOY, and this is personified in WISDOM! Our JOY CAN OVERFLOW everday as we celebrate being in His presence.  Wisdom is PURE and BEAUTIFUL, it helps us as LEADERS when we minister to God's people; and it is promised to us, if we seek after it every day.

"I was like a child BY HIS SIDE. I was HAPPY everyday (filled with delight). I enjoyed being in GOD'S PRESENCE. I rejoiced in His world and was happy with people (delighted in mankind)." Proverbs 8:30&31 (ICB/NIV)

"I have told you this, so that my JOY may be in you, and that YOUR JOY may be COMPLETE." John 15:11 (NIV)

PROVERBS 7 - MORE WARNINGS AGAINST ADULTERY

1. GOD'S LOVING BOUNDARIES -
BE CAREFUL LITTLE EYES AND FEET.

"My son, remember what I say. Treasure my commandsKeep my commands and you will LIVE. Guard my teachings as the apple of your eye. Bind them on your fingers, wriite them on on the tablet of your heart." Proverbs 7:1-3 (ICB)

Sin is trick! We know it is wrong - this is what our parents and teachers have taught us.  But when we grow older we begin to question what we are taught. Solomon's son's began to do this too. Like their father had done, they began to put their themselves into the way of TEMPTATION - falling into EVIL AND ADULTERY.

"We need to protect God's teachings as we would our own eyes. HIS WORD will help us avoid temptation. We need to ask God for help, to turn our minds eyes and feet in the opposite direction. These are not words of a DICTATOR, but a LOVING FATHER. They are designed for JUSTICE, PEACE AND FULLNESS OF LIFE"             Nicky Gumbel

"Wisdom and understanding will keep them away from the adulterous woman, from the wayward woman (unfaithful wife) with seductive (pleasing) words."                                                  Proverbs 7:5 (NIV/ICB)

Solomon was an encouraging parent, like our Father God, Jesus and the Holy Spirit is with us. "Wisdom" is an "intimate friendship" that gives us "insight" and keeps us out if trouble. God will held us to keep the "boundaries" from temptation. , so we can live a full and happy lives.

2. FAITHFUL RELATIONSHIPS -
WARNING AGAINST ADULTEROUS WOMEN

This is another Proverb that warns us against the dangers of unfaithfulness. Temptation luks at every corner. Unfaithfulness has the potential to destroy relationships (marriages), ruining lives. .

"Solomon loved many foreign women. Besides Pharoah's daughter, he married women from Moab, Ammon, Edom, Sidon, and from among the Hittites. The Lord had clearly instructed the people of Israel, "You must not marry them, because they will turn your hearts to their gods." Yet Solomon insisted on loving them anyway.......In Solmon's old age, they turned his heart to worship other gods instead of being completely FAITHFUL TO THE LORD HIS GOD, as his father David had been......He refused to FOLLOW THE LORD COMPLETELY. Solomon did what was evil in the Lord's sight." 1 King 11:1&2, 4&6 (NLT)

Solomon was looking out of his window and he recognizes his "young self". He saw a shameless and seductive woman, leading young men astray. He wanted to warn his sons. The woman had just been to the Temple and made a fellowship offering, then she took hold of this young man, making it difficult for him to walk away from her.

"Out came a woman. She approached him,  dressed like a prostitute, seductively, with craft intent (a sly of heart)..... She threw her arms around him and kissed him......With persuasive words (pretty speech) she led him astray, seducing him with her talk (flattery). " Proverbs 7:10,13 &21(NIV/NLT)

"We are tempted with comfort and pleasure, and the only way to keep away from this temptation is to AVOID IT. Sexual sin may provide pleasure for a season but they bring death TO TRUST AND RELATIONSHIPS. Adultery can also bring down leaders in our Churches and their ministries. Jesus reminds us that they are guilty and victims. They have redemption from Christ, but the damage is done"             Barry Water (Wales)/Kris Langham

"Beware of being entrapped in the world's lies, the promises of sensuality a means of happiness for a while, but insignificance. We need to be FIRMLY GROUNDED IN CHRIST, diligent in READING GOD'S WORD and PRAY, FOLLOWING THE LORD'S WILL in our lives." Max Lucado

On our wedding day Mark and I made some promises to each other, and in PRAYER we seek the Lord's guidance to help us keep them. This is how my parents brought me up, and we encourage our son to do the same, just  as Solomon did with his sons.

"Now then, my friends (my son, listen to me, take these words of mine seiously, pay attention to what I say." Proverbs 7:24 (MSG/NIV)

PROVERBS 6:12-19: SELF DISCIPLINE

                                            3. GOD'S REACTION TO EVIL

"There are six things the Lord hates. There are seven things He cannot stand: a proud look, a lying tongue, hands that kill innocent people, a mind that thinks up evil plans, a witness who tells lies, feet who are quick to do evil, and a man who causes trouble among brothers." Proverbs 6:16-19 (ICB)

These are 6 things we hate in our FAMILY, in our CHURCH and in the WORKPLACE and COMMUNITY. God hates these things too:

* ARROGANCE: Haughty eyes and Pride.

* DISHONESTY: Lying and False Witness

* EVIL: Murder, Anger and Hatred.

* WICKEDNESS: Evil plots and Wrongdoing

* ADULTERY: Lust

* DISCORD: Trouble in the Family.

GOD IS LOVE, JUST and HOLY! These sins can cause "enormous damage" with our relationships in out lives, especially in our families. They can bring division in our Church, Neighbourhood and Workplace. The only thing we can do when we face these temptations, is to ask for the Lord's strength and courage so we do not face them alone.

Jesus was led to the cross so that we could have forgiveness for our sins. In the same way, God shows His great LOVE for us.

"Christ died for us while we were still sinners. In this way God shows His great love for us." Romans 5:8 (ICB)

"In Christ we are set free by the blood of Christ's death. And we have forgiveness because of God's rich grace." Ephesians 1:7 (ICB)

                                      4. WARNING AGAINST ADULTERY

"My son, keep your father's command and do not forsake your mother's teaching. Bind them on your heart; fasten them around your neck. When you WALK they will GUIDE YOU; when you SLEEP, they will WATCH OVER YOU; when you AWAKE, they will SPEAK TO YOU. For this command is a LAMP, this teaching is a LIGHT, and correction and instruction are the way of life." Proverbs 6:20-23 (NIV)

Solomon started this next chapter on a lighter note, with the encouraging words of his teachings. But he was going to get a little heavy with his warnings on ADULTERY AND LUST. It's like a powerful fire - sex outside marriage!

Mark has been spending the last few weeks building a fire in his fire pit. I thought he had become a (pyramaniac) - with his uncontrollable urge to start fires - but he just wanted to clear some wood around the property. The fire did look good, but when left unmanageable, it can cause a bushfire. It reminds me of the T.V show we are watching at the moment: "Country Fire". They always start with small fires, but the sparks spread to homes, forests and at times, even the firefighters.

"Lust is pornogrophy, and the top Pornsites on our computers/TV's are Netflix, Amazon and Tik Tok. Anyone can gain access, and they are free. You can click page by page, image by image - violent, deviant, degrading and immoral. A person is not necessarily evil, but their brain is destabilized by a chemical flow. An addiction intensifies and you become VULNERABLE. It's not right - it's an UNTRUTH, a FALSE NARRATIVE and an OVERREACTION that can lead to terrible sinful consequences."                                                                                                         Max Lucado

"So it is the man who sleeps with another man's wife. He who emraces he will never go UNPUNISHED......  But a man who commits adultery has no sense (he is an utter fool); whoever does so destroys himself, He will be wounded and disgraced. His shame will never be wiped away (erased)." Proverbs 6:32&33 (NLT/NIV/ICB)

Remember King David's affair with Bathsheba. It led to the death of her husband. And David's son, ended up raping his sister Tamar, and his brother consequently murdered him.

The pull of LUST and ADULTERY is strong but GOD'S POWER IS STRONGER. You can be healed from this struggle.

                    * Take every thought captive and OBEY CHRIST.
                    * Parents help your children - check the INTERNET.
                    * Offer God the parts of your body - EYES, MOUTH, SEXUAL ORGANS.

"We destroy every proud thing that raises itself against the knowledge of God. We capture every thought and make it give up and obey Christ."                                                                                                                  2 Corinthians 10:5 (ICB)

"Do not offer the parts of your body to serve sin. Do not use your bodies to do evil, but offer yourselves to God. Be like people who have died and now live forever. Offer the parts of your body to God to be used for doing good." Romans 6:13 (ICB)

"They belong to the Lord. Cause me to use them for your glory."                                                                                                          1 Thessalonians 4:5 (MSG)

Solomon warned his son about adultery and lust - sex outside marriage. They were encouraged in Proverbs 5 to enjoy the love of their wife. They were encouraged to not let negative sexual thoughts occupy their minds.

"Do not be seduced by lust. Falling prey to lust only leads to moral ruin and spiritual death. Avoid anything that causes you to desire anyone other than your own spouse. Take extra time to demonstrate your LOVE FOR THEM." Max Lucado

PROVERBS 6: 1-11 : SELF DISCIPLINE

These first 11 verses in Proverbs 6 give us some PRACTICAL WISDOM strategies on how not how to live SELF DISCIPLINED LIVES and how not to WASTE OUR TIME.

                           1. BEING THE MASTER OF OUR FINANCES

"My child, be careful about giving a guarantee for somebody else (a friend or stranger), security for a debt, a promise for what they owe. You might be trapped by what you say (an agreement). You might be caught by your own words. My child, you might be under somebody elses control (your friend's mercy). Folllow my advice: this is how you get free. Save yourself. Go to your neighbour and swallow your pride. Beg him for freedom from your debt - what you have promised - have your name erased." Proverbs 6:1-3 (ICB/NLT)

There are plenty of FINANCIAL TRAPS - especially ONLINE - Google investments and pledges. I have been been doing some work on my computer today, and I have had so many adds coming up interrupting my work - tempting me to "clean up my Tablet and Phone". At first it sounded a good idea. Then I realized it was just a SCAM and they wanted my MONEY!

When these come up, I usually check these SCAMS with my husband, because they are detrimental to my family. Even when it is something religious!! Even our friends and neighbours can at times lead us astray. We need to save ourselves from "foolish traps". You just don't know what might happen when you get into DEBT, even when you are just helping someone out of the kindness of our hearts.

Can you really afford it? Keeep yourself out of harms way. TRUST THE LORD! PRAY - and seek GOD'S GUIDANCE, and let Him be the "Master of your finances."

"Free yourself like a gazelle (a deer) running from a hunter. Like a bird from the snare of a the fowler (a trapper)." Proverbs 6:5 (NLT/ICB)

2. MASTER YOUR TIME - THR ART OF AN ANT

"Go to the ant, you sluggard (lazy person), consider its ways, watch what they do and be wise! It has no co commander, no overseer, leader, or ruler, yet it stores provisions in summer, yet it gathers its food (supplies) at harvest."                                                    Proverbs 6:6&7 (NIV/ICB)

"How long will you lay there and sleep, you lazy person? When will you wake up? To take a little extra sleep, a little more slumber (a nap). You fold your hands to rest."                Proverbs 6:9&10 (NLT/ICB)

We can easily become lazy and waste our time.  But it's also important to get enough sleep and not over do it. Both have "disastrous consequences".

a) We can learn from the ANTS who work extremely hard. They hardly ever sleep, and they spend time feeding the other ants. Solomon wants us to take notes of them: we  don't want to waste our time , we need to use it wisely.

I love to spend my time productively in God's Word, doing my exercises and I love writing and studying. Mark loves the outdoors, fixing things and gardening. We both love to help help others, especially our young family.

b) But now, we are also at an age, where we need our sleep, Mark especially in the afternoon. Accordind to Dr Lee Warren, my online Neurosurgeon, this isn't a bad thing. Sleeping doesn't mean we are lazy!

"Sleep cleanses metabolic waste, consolidates positive memories, resets emotional circuits. Even one night of better sleep (or an afternoon nap in our case) can improve mental clarity and emotional steadiness. We need to protect our sleep and be consistent with bedtimes and morning wake ups. " Dr Lee Warren

I agree with both Dr Warren and Solomon. We need to get enough sleep and rest to stay healthy, but we don't want to waste our time with unproductive activity. If we ask God to help us, it's amazing how much He can use us.

PROVERBS 5: FAITHFULNESS IN MARRIAGE

"My son, pay attention to MY WISDOM, listen carefully to my WISE COUNSEL (UNDERSTANDING). Then you will show discernment (use good sense) and your lips will express what you learn (watch what you say)."                                                                                                               Proverbs 5:1&2 (NLT/ICB)

Proverbs 5 begins with Solomon's wise teachings to his sons, and they should also be to our daughters. He was remembering times when he'd made mistakes and "fallen" - following his own way, rather than the will of God; and he wanted them to "listen carefully" to his wise teaching so they would make the same mistakes.

As a mother, teacher and grandmother, I always wanted to read God's Word, so that I could follow GOD'S PATH and teach my children to do the same. I made mistakes - I  definetely wasn't a perfect mother and teacher -  there were times I FAILED; but I always tried to show show "good sense" and to "watch what I said". To live the way Jesus wanted me to and be a witness to my family and the world. I am blessed to have see my son and his wife, and children, serving the Lord in their local Church and community.

"You are a LIGHT that  gives LIGHT TO THE WORLD. A city built on a hill cannot be hidden......In the same way, YOU SHOULD BE A LIGHT FOR OTHER PEOPLE. Live, so they will see the GOOD THINGS YOU DO. Live, so that THEY WILL PRAISE YOUR FATHER INN HEAVEN." Matthew 5:14&16 (ICB)

                                        1. BE FAITHFUL IN MARRIAGE

"The lips of the adulterous woman (another man's wife) drip sweet as honey and her speech (words) is smoother, pleasant than olive oil; but in the end she is bitter thab gall (bring you sorrow). She will cause you pain like a two edged sword."                                                                                                                  Proverbs 5:3&4 (NIV/ICB)

Too many Christians are tempted by ADULTERY, feeling it is okay, as long as they are FORGIVEN. But this does not relieve us from the CONSEQUENCES and the HURT that PAIN it may cause others.

"Now then, my son, LISTEN TO ME, do not run away (ignore) what I say. Keep to a path far from her, (stay away from such a woman),  do not go near to the door of her house." Provebrs 5:7&8 (NIV/ICB)

As Solomon realized, the trouble with regret, you can GO BACK IN TIME and CHANGE YOUR WRONG DECISIONS. Our consequences can touch the lives of others. Solomon had made many mistakes with many wives and concubines, and he had even TURNED AWAY FROM GOD; but he didn't want this life for his sons  (or daughters).

"Be wise when it comes to women. Find pleasure in your OWN WIFE: LOVE HER AND BE HAPPY. Don't be tempted by a "female fatale", a married woman".                                                                                                                     David Alexander

Solomon wanted his sons to care for his wives - "drink water from your own cistern". He wanted them to be faithful in their sexual relations. Water was a precious commodity in their community, and amd you never let your "water stream into the public squares".

"May your fountain be blessed and may you rejoice with the wife of your youth. A LOVING DOE, A GRACEFUL DEER.....May you always be captivated by HER LOVE"                                                                                              Proverbs 5:18&19 (NIV/NLT)

"Your sexuality belongs at home, not for anyone else. It is like a "spring of fresh water". It is yours alone, never to be shared with others. There is something about a homogomous relationship that causes sex to grow better IN TIME. It is more romantic with TRUST. A man who VALUES HIS WIFE, becomes captivated by her beauty and love." Peyton Jones

These first verses in Proverbs 5, capture both the appeal and the danger of sexual temptation. You don't want to end your life with regrets. WISDOM IS OUR FRIEND and it helps us make the right choices. Wives beed to make these decisions too, for there is a lot of JOY in A HEALTHY ROMANCE!

                     2. BETTER TOGETHER: MARRIAGE: TWO BECOME ONE

"TWO ARE BETTER THAN ONE. They get more done WORKING TOGETHER. If one person falls, the other can help them up. But it is bad if a person is ther, and NO ONE IS THERE TO HELP HIM. ......A rope that has 3 PARTS WRAPPED TOGETHER is HARD TO BREAK." Ecclesiastes 4:9 & 12b (MSG)

"I went to a marriage course with Nicky and Sila Lee. Nicky showed a picture of marriage: He took 2 strands of different wool and weaved them TOGETHER. They were NOT EASILY BROKEN. He then took an invisiblle fishing line - representing GOD as the CENTRE - giving ENORMOUS STRENGTH. Friendships and Marriages are wonderful gifts"  Nicky Gumbel

Mark and I have been married for nearly 43 years. We have "adopted" parents and friends who have been married for many more - their 50's and 60's. Their relationships are a real BLESSING to us, and a WITNESS - full of LOVE, JOY, GRACE AND ROMANCE

"A man will leave his father and mother and be UNITED WITH HIS WIFE. And the two people will become ONE BODY." Genesis 2:24 (ICB)

This is a beautiful description of two people becoming ONE with EACH  OTHER and with GOD. They are becoming intimate as husband and wife. This is so much better than the "cheap thrills" that come from promiscuity and adultery.

"GOD'S LOVE is the 3RD STRAND of the CHORD of this MARRIAGE relationship. JESUS is the central principle of how we should LOVE ONE ANOTHER. With Jesus in the centre, the 3 strands will not be BROKEN." Nicky Gumbel.

"Be happy with the wife you married when you were a young man . SHE GIVE YOU JOY as your fountain gives you water. SHE IS AS LOVELY as an angel , beautiful as a rose, AND GRACEFUL as a deer. LET HER LOVE MAKE YOU HAPPY (take delight in her body) LET HER LOVE always hold you captive (never take it for granted) "                                   Proverbs 5:18&19 (ICB/MSG)

PROVERBS 13 - WALK WITH THE WISE

" A wise son heeds (responds to)  his father's instruction (discipline), but a mocker does not  respond (listen) to rebuke."...
